F1 Teams of the Past – AGS

Automobiles Gonfaronnaises Sportives (AGS) were a Formula 1 team from 1986 to 1991.  They started out in Formula 2 and F3000 before making their debut in the 1986 season, running a couple of races towards the end of the season with Italian Ivan Capelli.  Pascal Fabre took on the role in 1987 but didn’t do very well and was replaced by Brazilian Roberto Moreno for the final two events.  It was Moreno who scored their first F1 point in Adelaide that year.  Philippe Streiff took over the lone seat for the 1988 season, and was going to stay their in 1989 but had a career ending crash in pre-season testing that left him paralyzed.  Gabriele Tarquini took over and drove alongside German driverJoachim Winkelhock, and scored a point in the Mexican Grand Prix.  After Silverstone however, neither AGS saw the start of a race.  In fact, both 1990 and 1991 were right-offs, only qualifying 8 times out of a possible 60.  The team gave up on F1 after the 1991 Spanish Grand Prix, but remained as a Formula one driving school.
